Miscellany Post 1.01 [Grammar Rant, School Rant, Roomie Not-So-Rant, and Music]

Usage reminder:
From whence is a tautology—'from' is already included in the definition of 'whence'. So, by that argument, 'from whence it came' should just be 'whence it came' . People, such as myself, who find the rhythm of from whence more pleasant than just whence may not care a whit, but if you do—and I'm looking at you, LotR writers—then take note. You could also cite Shakespeare, Dickens, and Twain as people who have used 'from whence', but I don't necessarily like arguments from authority, fallacious as they are. Hell, Dickens' abuse of the [poor, sweet innocent] semi-colon should be illegal! And the people who would let you use Shakespeare as a reason why you could say 'from whence' would lambaste you for daring to use a double-negative.

Which, by the way, is a nuance of language I still think we should be able to use.'Why's that?' you ask... )

Oh, and yeah, one last thing: it's lambaste,
not landblast,
not lamblast,
not lambash,
not lamb-baste,
not land-bash.

Lambaste.

Perfectly wonderful word that we all should use more.

Well... we should all use it, but not do it. ;-)

Adventures with the Roommate! )

School starts next week. So this weekend and taking my laptop, leaving my cellphone at home, and getting a hotel room. I'm gonna try and get as much writing done as possible. I have no requirements as to what—fanfiction, original fiction, short-stories, revisions—just that I'm gonna write. All weekend. In a hotel.

No...! To make it more fitting, a Motel! Maybe I'll bring a bottle of whiskey and stare at it, unopened.

Oh, in case anyone cares, here's my school schedule: under the covers... )

And I leave you with my current fave song from Beck. It's an older song, but not by much.
